Safety Tips for Driving in Inclement Weather
While it is unclear what led to the tree falling on the passenger vehicle in Mount Vernon, it is believed that it was a weather-related accident. Motorists are encouraged to avoid roads during any inclement weather such as heavy rain or snow, high winds, or thunderstorms.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cautions drivers to:
- Drive slowly during heavy rains due to slick roads;
- Allow plenty of stopping distance;
- Avoid flooded roadways and areas;
- Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists;
- Check for local road closures; and
- Prepare an emergency roadside kit.
In addition to heavy rain and high winds, lightning can also be extremely hazardous to motorists. If possible it is recommended that drivers pull off roadways and seek shelter during severe storms. If lightning is in the area, drivers should avoid touching anything metal and should never take shelter under a tree.
