Pedestrian-involved crashes have increased nationwide. In addition, the number of fatalities in these crashes has gone up 50%. In Westchester County alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 27 pedestrian fatalities in a four-year span, with 13 of these fatal crashes occurring in 2019-2020.

Recent Pedestrian Accidents
As reported by lohud.com, these are just a few examples of the pedestrian accidents in the last year in our community, many of which could have been prevented:
- In White Plains, a Bronx woman was crossing at the intersection of Tarrytown Road and Central Avenue when she was struck and killed by a drunk driver.
- In Dobbs Ferry, a man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run on Route 9, with the driver found and arrested soon after.
- In Carmel, a man was struck and killed while walking along Old Route 9.
- In New Rochelle, a Queens man was leaving his job and was struck by two drivers while crossing Main Street.
Why Are There More Pedestrian Accidents Now Than Ever Before?
What has triggered this alarming increase in pedestrian accidents? Several factors play a role, but the experts agree on some basic changes in our driving habits being the leading causes.
There are fewer sedans on the road, and more, larger SUVs. Any impact with a pedestrian is more likely to cause severe injuries or death. The use of smartphones is also adding to roadway dangers with distracted drivers and distracted pedestrians. Excessive drinking by a driver or a pedestrian also contributes to the high number of injuries and death.
What Are Towns Doing to Enhance Pedestrian Safety?
Towns, such as Greenburgh, are forming pedestrian safety committees to review sidewalks, crosswalks and speed bumps. They are also adding better lighting and refuge islands.
Earlier this year, Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner lamented that the fatality on the Bronx River Parkway was the sixth time a pedestrian had been struck in recent months. A seventh fatal pedestrian accident prompted Town Supervisor Paul Feiner to issue a report pleading for additional funding for pedestrian safety, including red-light cameras, as reported in the Yonkers Tribune.
