The Westchester Community Mourns Another Tragic Loss

Teen Drivers Are at Risk on the Road

On Thursday, February 25, 2021, on the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers, a car rolled over and crashed with four young occupants inside. The single-car accident killed two 17-year-olds, one who was ejected from the vehicle. Also injured were the 18-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger who were taken to Jacobi Hospital for their injuries.

Assisting at the scene were the Yonkers Police Department, Yonkers Fire Department and Empress EMS. Both lanes of the parkway were shut for several hours as crash investigators reviewed the scene. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Teen Drivers More at Risk

Unfortunately, motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of unintentional deaths for teens in New York State. The risk for car accidents in this age group is higher than any other age group. Statistics show that per mile driven, teen drivers are nearly three times as likely to be in a fatal crash than those aged 20 or older.

How to Help Your Teen Driver Stay Safe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a “What Can You Do?” checklist for parents to help them educate teenagers to the dangers of driving. In part, the list includes:

  • Learn about your State’s GDL (graduated driver licensing) laws. Note that the laws and restrictions can vary from State to State.
  • Talk to your teen about the dangers of drug and alcohol use.
  • Be a good role model. Remember that your child looks to you as a driver, so practice safe driving yourself.
  • Don’t rely solely on a driver’s education class to teach your teen to drive. Remember that driver’s education should be used as part of the education.

The NHTSA concludes, “You have more influence on your teen than you may think. Be a good example and get involved in their driving habits from the beginning, and stay involved for the duration of their teen years.” Good advice!
