Peekskill Accident: Fatal Crash Involved Wrong-Way Driver on Route 9

Stay Alert, Stay Alive

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics, nighttime accidents have a fatality rate that is approximately three times higher than when driving during the day.  There are various reasons for this including compromised night vision, fatigue, rush hour, and impaired driving.  The most common reason, compromised night vision, is due to depth perception, color recognition and peripheral vision.  Visibility decreases to 250 feet, which creates less time to react, and an increase in driving errors.  The NHTSA reports that “while we do only one quarter of our driving at night, 50% of traffic deaths happen at night.  It doesn’t matter whether the road is familiar or not, driving at night is always more dangerous.”

Although still under investigation, the 9:30 p.m. Wednesday crash on Route 9 in Peekskill might be an example of a horrific nighttime driving error.  A motorist ended up going the wrong-way down Route 9 and crashed into other vehicles.  The police reported that a least one person was killed in this senseless accident.

We all need to take extra precautions when driving at night.  Stay alert.  Stay alive.
