In order to reduce the number of e-bike accidents in the state, New York has instituted several laws to protect riders and non-riders alike. It is important to know and understand these laws to ensure that you are safe on the road.
2023 E-Bike Laws in New York:
- All riders must be 16 years of age or older.
- E-bikes may not be driven on streets with a speed limit greater than 30 mph.
- Individuals under the age of 18 must wear a helmet while riding an e-bike.
- Delivery drivers must wear a helmet while riding an e-bike.
- All riders must wear a helmet if their bike can exceed 20 mph.
- E-bikes may be driven in bike lanes.
- The speed limit for e-bikes is 20 mph.
- An e-bike’s motor may not exceed 750w.
In New York, electronic bikes are grouped into 3 classes based on their speed and whether they are pedal-assist or throttle. It is important to note that e-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks and can cause serious injury if driven in areas with heavy amounts of pedestrian traffic.
