In New York, electronic bikes are grouped into 3 classes based on their speed and whether they are pedal-assist or throttle. It is important to note that e-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks and can cause serious injury if driven in areas with heavy amounts of pedestrian traffic.
E-Bike Accidents and Liability
Electronic bikes present a danger to riders, pedestrians, and other motorists when they are not driven safely. On the one hand, it can be difficult for other motorists to see e-bikes making them vulnerable to sideswipe collisions. On the other hand, e-bikes that are driven on sidewalks can result in harm to pedestrians. If you are injured in a pedestrian accident caused by an e-bike, it is strongly recommended that you speak to an attorney.
Deaths Related to Electronic Bikes
As reported by CBS News, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that at least 119 people were killed in accidents involving electric scooters or e-bikes from 2017 to 2021. It is believed that with the increase in popularity of electric bikes, there will be an increase in the number of e-bike accidents.
